It’s like insurance. It’s a good way to know that you have an option should there be a fire that starts on or near your property.

How Trent Palmer Protected His Land

When the 60,000+ acre Bug Fire surrounded Trent Palmer’s property on the California–Nevada border, fire crews made a stand at his home, then moved on to the next one.

At 2 AM, a 40-foot tree flared up right behind the house. Trent put it out with his QTAC 125HP, towed behind a UTV on a QTAC XDT trailer. He spent the next several days with the skid, drowning smoldering brush and holding the unburned edges of his land.

That’s what a QTAC is built for: pre-wetting your property, knocking down spot fires and mop-up once it’s safe to be back on your land.

How landowners use it

Water Where Your Property Needs It

Pressurized water on your schedule, from the front gate to the back forty.

Pre-wet your perimeter

Soak defensible space, wood piles and outbuildings before embers arrive.

Ember patrol

Knock down spot fires from flying embers before they grow into a threat.

Mop-up after the front

The first 48–72 hours are critical. Patrol your lines and drown smoldering roots and logs.

Use the water you have

Every QTAC can draft. Pull from a pond, pool, ditch or stock tank and keep pumping.

Burn piles & controlled burns

Keep pressurized water on standby while you clear brush in the wet season.

Mowing & saw standby

A blade strike or chain spark in dry grass can start a fire. Have water running nearby.

FAQ

Landowner Questions

What is a QTAC fire skid?

A QTAC fire skid is a self-contained firefighting unit with a water tank, a Honda-powered pump and a hose. It slides into the bed of an ATV, UTV or pickup truck, or rides on the QTAC XDT trailer. QTAC skids are built in Chico, California from PolyTough® welded copolymer.

Can a homeowner stop a wildfire with a fire skid?

No. Nobody can stop a wind-driven wildfire front, and you should always follow evacuation orders. A fire skid is for pre-wetting your property before embers arrive, putting out small spot fires, and mop-up after the front has passed and it’s safe to return.

Which QTAC is right for my property?

Start with what you drive. The 20S fits an ATV. The 40S fits UTVs with limited payload. The 85S and 85HP fit full-size UTVs, and the 85HP adds a high-pressure pump with 80+ feet of reach. The 125HP is sized for pickup trucks. The XDT trailer lets you tow an 85HP or 125HP behind a UTV.

Will it fit my UTV or truck?

Check payload first. Full of water, the 20S weighs about 225 lbs, the 40S 488 lbs, the 85S 880 lbs, the 85HP 940 lbs and the 125HP 1,340 lbs. Tell us your make and model and QTAC will confirm fit before you order.

Can a QTAC pull water from my pond, pool or ditch?

Yes. Every QTAC skid can draft from an outside water source like a pond, pool, irrigation ditch or stock tank. As long as you have fuel and water, it keeps pumping. A draft hose kit is available as an option.

How far does a QTAC spray?

The 20S sprays a 45-foot stream. The 85S reaches over 55 feet with its standard nozzle. The 85HP and 125HP reach over 80 feet in calm conditions.

What is the QTAC XDT trailer?

The XDT is an off-road-only trailer built to carry QTAC 85HP and 125HP skids behind a UTV. It has a steel frame, off-road tires, a 2,000 lb GVWR and a 1,600 lb payload, with an optional utility rack. It isn’t DOT legal for public roads, and the skid is sold separately.

Can I add foam?

Yes, on the 40S, 85HP and 125HP. The optional Scotty around-the-pump foam system mixes Class A foam into your water so it soaks into brush and smoldering wood.

How do I get pricing?

Request a quote on this page or call 866-308-6699. A QTAC team member will recommend a skid for your property, confirm it fits your vehicle and send current pricing. There’s no obligation to buy.

Do you have units in stock?

We keep some units on hand and ready to ship, and the 85HP usually ships in 3–5 business days. Ask what’s in stock when you request a quote, and your quote confirms the ship date.
